About Fiona Hamilton
Fiona Hamilton is a Bristol-based fine art printmaker whose work explores the ecological sublime and our relationship with the natural world. Working across drawing, intaglio etching, drypoint, lithography and chine collé, she creates detailed, atmospheric landscapes that invite contemplation and slow looking. Through intricate mark-making and subtle tonal variation, often in a restrained palette of black, white and natural paper tones, her work evokes the sensory experience of being immersed in woodland environments, particularly among ancient and mature trees.
Her practice is informed by ecological research, especially the work of forest ecologist Suzanne Simard and her writing on mycorrhizal networks, as outlined in Finding the Mother Tree. These ideas of interconnectivity and environmental vulnerability underpin Fiona’s work, offering quiet reflection on resilience and our place within fragile ecosystems.
Fiona has over 20 years of professional experience since graduating with a BA (Hons) Fine Art in 2002 (Canterbury), and completed an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking at UWE Bristol in 2023. Alongside her studio practice, she founded and ran Soma Gallery in Bristol for over a decade, later transitioning it online to focus on her own work. She is a Printmaking Technical Specialist and works at Bristol School of Art where she is Printmaking Technician, and Spike Print Studio leading workshops and demonstrating processes, alongside her practice.
Fiona makes her work at Spike Print Studio and The Lemonade Press, both based in Bristol. She contributes to contemporary discourse through writing including for Impact Journal. A recent article in Paper/Matters journal discusses Fiona’s chosen matrix alongside two other drypoint artists.
Recent exhibitions include Dialogues with Nature (Centrespace, Bristol), Print Rnyngwladol Print International at Tŷ Pawb (Wrexham), The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers International Original Print Exhibition, the New English Art Club Annual Exhibition, Wells Art Contemporary and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair.
